Panel Discussion: AI in Mathematical Research

The mathematical reasoning capabilities of AI models have progressed rapidly in recent years, to the point where chatbots can solve non-trivial research problems. This panel reflects on what this technology means for the mathematical profession. What are AI's current capabilities, and how are they reshaping mathematicians' workflows? What further changes should we anticipate, and what adaptations will the community need to make in response? What new possibilities does AI unlock, and what new concerns does it raise? We will share different perspectives on these questions, and discuss the evolving role of humans and AI in the future of mathematics and computer science.

The Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF) is an annual networking conference where 200 carefully selected young researchers in mathematics and computer science spend a week interacting with the laureates of the most prestigious awards in their disciplines: the Abel Prize, ACM A.M. Turing Award, ACM Prize in Computing, Fields Medal, IMU Abacus Medal and Nevanlinna Prize.
